Claudia van Orden has been a professor of Family Businesses at Windesheim University of Applied Sciences since August 2023. Previously, she was an acting professor and lecturer-researcher in the UAS research groups Networks in a Circular Economy and Social Innovation.

Research Focus

In her research Claudia focuses mainly on stakeholders in the entrepreneurial ecosystem around family businesses. To understand better how family businesses can increase their social impact, in their local community, and beyond. For instance, how do SME family businesses select their chain partners? And how can they present themselves as attractive collaboration partners?

Degree Programme

Claudia studied psychology and law at Utrecht University and holds a Master’s degree in Industrial Psychology from Hull University (UK). In the year 2000 she obtained her doctoral degree from the University of Groningen, based on research she did in her first job with TNO Human Factors in Soesterberg.

Research Experience

After working in several HR-related positions at TNO Management Consultants, GITP and Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen, Claudia has been working as an applied-science researcher again since 2016. She has worked mainly on research projects for and with social enterprises, particularly regarding the measurement/visualization of social impact; social procurement and tendering; and collaboration issues between partners in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. With her qualitative research, she has contributed to the development of knowledge and a toolbox for entrepreneurs.

She is now using her expertise and experience for the Centre of Expertise in Family Businesses, her mission being to support precisely this category of businesses in increasing their social impact. Together with family businesses, the education sector and other stakeholders the Centre of Expertise generates solutions to real-life issues from the field.
