Dive into the world of sustainable mobility, urban design, and policy development. Together with Dutch and international students, you will explore how cycling infrastructure contributes to healthier, safer, and more accessible cities. You will learn from international best practices, analyze local challenges, and work on a real-life project where your ideas can make a tangible impact. Whether you aspire to be an urban planner, policymaker, designer, or changemaker. This exchange programme equips you with the knowledge, tools, and network to shape the city of tomorrow.

What's International Cycling like?
The International Cycling exchange programme combines theory with practice. You will immediately collaborate with stakeholders from the field. Below you can read how this full-time bachelor's level programme of 15 ECTS credits is structured. The programme will be taught in teaching block 2 of our autumn semester (15 November–31 January).

Programme structure and learning outcomes
This exchange programme is divided into four elements:
- Theory and Analysis
- Multidisciplinary Project
- International Exchange and Excursions
- Participation in a Techathon, in which students from all the different mini-minors work together in a multidisciplinary way on a current, complex practical issue from the professional field and research groups.
Supporting knowledge and skills are provided through integrated workshops, lectures and field visits.
As this is a new programme currently being developed, the exact line-up of workshops and lectures may evolve.
Learning outcomes
After completing this programme, you will be able to:
- Analyse cycling-related challenges from different disciplinary perspectives.
- Apply international best practices in cycling policy, design, and promotion.
- Collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary and intercultural teams.
- Develop and present innovative, evidence-based solutions for real-world cycling issues.
- Reflect on the role of cycling in building sustainable and liveable cities worldwide.

Theory & Analysis
You will build foundational knowledge and gain a global context for understanding sustainable mobility, covering:
- Global cycling cultures: comparative study of cycling habits and cultures around the world
- Cycling infrastructure & urban design: principles of safe, inclusive, and accessible infrastructure
- Mobility policy & governance: policy development, stakeholder analysis, and implementation strategies
- Data & impact: using data to evaluate and improve cycling conditions in cities

Multidisciplinary Project
Together with your team, you will work on a real-life assignment from a professional partner such as a municipality, consultancy firm, or NGO. You will:
- Analyse the challenge from multiple perspectives.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to co-create solutions.
- Present professional and feasible recommendations.
Possible topics include:
- Developing cycling strategies for growing cities.
- Improving safety, accessibility and inclusiveness of cycling networks.
- Exploring the contribution of cycling to health and wellbeing.
- Workshops and expert input are embedded in the project, giving you both theoretical grounding and practical skills.

International Exchange and Excursions
Learn beyond borders and broaden your perspectives through:
- Dutch excursions: Visit leading cycling cities such as Utrecht, Groningen, and Houten
- Guest lectures: Gain insights from international experts
- Student exchange sessions: Intercultural learning and peer-to-peer inspiration

Elective modules
Complete your exchange semester or year by taking one or two cross-departmental modules. You will receive ECTS credits when you complete a module successfully.

Requirements and application
This programme is open to bachelor students from a wide range of study backgrounds, such as urban planning, civil engineering, mobility studies, geography, health, economics, social sciences, and environmental studies.
You are welcome if you are interested in sustainable mobility and want to collaborate in an international and multidisciplinary setting. English-language skills at B2 level are required.

Learning Agreement
When you decide to do an exchange programme at Windesheim, you have to sign the Learning Agreement of your programme. The Learning Agreement is a crucial document for the recognition of a study period abroad. It is an agreement between you, your university and Windesheim.
